Initially, the boy grew up in Saint Paul in a large family with six siblings, enrolled at the Saint Thomas Academy and graduated from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. After completing his studies, he worked at Kraft Foods as a specialist in accounting and marketing. In 1990 he left the US Navy to become a pilot candidate, but has been medically disqualified as a future airline pilot since childhood because of dyslexia. Apparently scared of the written words, he decided to overcome this handicap by devoting himself to reading and writing on a daily basis. He soon got the idea of writing a book – Term Limits (1998) – which was later added to the New York Times bestseller list.
Since 1999 he has been writing novels for the series “Mitch Rapp”. The main character Rapp grew up in Virginia; his only family member is his brother Steven Rapp and his wife Anna Rielly was a reporter who worked as a White House correspondent for NBC but was assassinated. The first book in the series was “Transfer of Power” (1999), which appeared at number 13 on the New York Times bestseller list. Provided that the author had a contract for six novels, all of which were included in the bestseller list, the contract was extended to four more books. In 2010 the legendary “American Assassin” appeared, which also entered the list of New York bestsellers. A total of 12 books in the “Mitch Rapp” series have been published, the last book in the series was “Kill Shot” (2012). In early 2008, the writer and CBS Corporation signed a contract to produce a film, American Assassin, based on Vince Flynn’s novel of the same name, directed by Michael Cuesta in 2017 and starring Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton.
