The girl first grew up in Canton, the only daughter and youngest child in the Cowsill family. She made her debut in the music industry as a member of The Cowsills in the 1960s when the large family clan of the Cowsills decided to pursue a career as a vocal group. In the mid-1960s, they signed a record deal with a small company and released the single “All I Really Wanna Be,” which was a commercial flop but nonetheless caught the attention of a major record company. The Rain, The Park and Other Things (1967) was her first pop number to make it to second place on the Billboard 200. Other successful singles were “We Can Fly” (1968), which took 21st place, and “Indian Lake” (1968), which took 10th place in the most important music charts in the USA. The band celebrated great success in 1969 with a version of the song “Hair” from the musical of the same name, which landed at number 2 on the Billboard 200. The band is still nicknamed America’s first musical family.

In addition, Susan began a solo career in 1976 and released several singles. She later appeared as a background singer for many artists including Hootie & the Blowfish, Mike Zito and Dwight Twilley, among others. In 2005 her first solo album was released with the title “Just Believe It”. Unfortunately, Susan experienced the extremely devastating storm Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which not only destroyed her home but also took her brothers Harry and Bill with it. In 2010 Susan Cowsill released her second album “Lighthouse” in which she paid tribute to them and reflected on their losses. It is worth noting that she appeared as a guest star on the HBO television series “Treme” (2011). The singer then recorded a joint album “At Least We Have Each Other” (2012) with Jon Dee Graham and Freedy Johnston. In 2014 Susan and Peterson founded the band The Psycho Sisters and released the album “Up on the Chair Beatrice”.

Eventually, in the singer’s personal life, the singer married Peter Holsapple in 1993 and they had a daughter, however Susan and Peter announced they separated in 2001. Cowsil has been married to Russ Broussard since 2003.
