Alex Mandel is the son of famous actor, comedian and producers Howie Mandel and Terry. He is the middle of two sisters, growing up Alex suffered from severe stuttering, and at one point he stopped speaking for almost a year. However, speech therapy was helpful so that he could communicate easily. He was later diagnosed with ADHD, which made school difficult. Alex’s father often tried to cheer him up with comedy, and Alex liked that.
Soon after, he realized that he was not only talented but also entertaining, so Mandel signed up for the community theater and told his parents that he would love to be an actor. His father supported him, getting him a first role on the sitcom called “Hidden Howie, The Private Life of a Public Nuisance” (2005) when Alex was only 15 in 2008. Howie convinced him to try to go to college go, and promised to give it a chance in production.
Alex studied theater at California State University in Northridge. He joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and during his time, the most successful period in his fraternity’s history, served as chairman of public relations and philanthropy. After two years, Mandel left college on the advice of a professor to pursue an acting dream and joined the Stella Adler Acting Academy in Hollywood.
“Howie Do It” (2009), “Scare Tactics” (2010-2011), “Destination Fear” (2012), “Freak Encounters” (2010) and “Deal With It” (2014) were the joke shows in which Mandel performed, and that earned him most of his income. However, the website he created, Stickham.com, lost all of its funding and he was devastated without knowing what to do next.
Mandel discovered YouTube in an unusual way – Alex was auditioning for a TV show and he was supposed to be playing a strange character. The producers asked him to upload his video to YouTube, but he kept it public so over 1000 people saw it in one day instead of just the casting director. He didn’t get the role, but Samuel’s character remains, and Alex made videos for months; Mandel realized that YouTube was his future.
Alex watched YouTube videos most of the time and attended the YouTube convention to meet all of his favorite YouTubers. Mandel met Roman Atwood, who would become his best friend and mentor; Atwood introduced him to vlogging and Alex started climbing the YouTube world. He’s created videos for many YouTubers, including his friend Atwood. Mandel got a call from Break (prank videos) and made a video that hit six million views in two days. They called him the Director of Pranks and he made a lot of videos which added to his popularity and also his net worth before deciding to quit and start his own YouTube channel.
