Michelle Miller Odinet [Michelle Odinet] (born around 1968) is an American attorney who was elected City Court Judge in Lafayette, Louisiana in November 2020. Odinet previously served as assistant district attorney in New Orleans and Lafayette and as a public defender. She resigned from her position as a judge on December 31, 2021, just days after a video surfaced in which she repeatedly voiced a racist slur.
Louisiana judge resigned on verbal racial defamation
A Lafayette, Louisiana town court judge resigned Friday after a video surfaced earlier this month showing people using racist language in their home.
After the video went viral, Michelle Odinet apologized and took a leave of absence. It revealed surveillance footage of an outdoor altercation with a burglar suspect that was shown on television in her home.
As the invisible viewers watch the film, they comment on it while repeatedly using a racial slur.
Odinet was caught on camera using the N word to describe men who broke into cars parked in front of their home. She originally refused to say who was using vulgarity, but then admitted it was her.
She said, “I take full responsibility for the hurtful words I used to describe the person who broke into the vehicles in my home,” Odinet wrote in her resignation letter. “I am sorry for the pain I have caused my community and I beg your forgiveness as my words have not promoted the public’s trust and integrity in the judiciary.”
“After much thought and prayer, and to facilitate healing within the community, I am hereby resigning as a judge in Lafayette City Court with immediate effect,” continued Odinet. “I am sending a copy of this letter to the Foreign Minister and I hope that a special election can be scheduled to fill the vacancy created by my resignation.”

Odinet took an unpaid leave of absence in December 2021 after a video surfaced showing her with racist comments inside her home. Odinet stated that at the time she was under the influence of a sedative and could not remember the incident. Vanessa Harris has been appointed by the Louisiana Supreme Court to replace Odinet effective December 17, 2021.
In December 2021, New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams urged the Civil Rights Department to investigate all New Orleans cases from Odinet.
Odinet resigned from the bank effective December 31, 2021.
