The TikTok (Android There iOS There network) has gained space in the everyday life of many users who have started to consume the content of the platform in the last year. To make the app more accessible, the company released a lighter version for phones with low storage space, TikTok Lite.
Publishing “lite” versions is a very common practice, especially among companies with popular applications. The key suggestion, as you can imagine, is to expand the platform’s user base.
However, these versions can generate a lot of dissatisfaction. Because in the name of “accessibility” they sometimes reach the user without important resources and even with an experience that is far from the original version.
Comparison of TikTok and TikTok Lite
Before getting into the details of the apps, here’s a warning: if you are an iOS user and want to use the lighter version, please note that you cannot. So far, TikTok Lite is only available for Android devices (4.1 or higher).
TikTok Lite: is the app really lighter?
Now that you are aware of this limitation, let’s get down to business. Since it’s an essentially lightweight version, the most pressing issue is the internal storage savings that the app offers.
TikTok, which is compatible with Android 4.4 or higher, occupies a generous 88 MB according to information in the Play Store. For comparison purposes, the occupied space is the same as in the famous Call of Duty®: Mobile game. Fortunately, the lite version of the social network cuts that number in half.
Differences and similarities
Size is a crucial issue and as we’ve seen, TikTok Lite does what it says on the tin. But what’s the user experience like after all? Overall, the apps are very similar, especially in terms of layout and navigation, which have remained almost unchanged. The most notable exception is the video preview, which is not available in the lightweight version.
Is it possible to create videos with TikTok Lite?
Interestingly, ByteDance managed to maintain the quality of the platform despite the huge space savings. However, it was necessary to relocate some resources to shorten the 44MB. This decision is directly reflected in the proposal from TikTok Lite, which clearly gives priority to video consumption.
However, this does not mean that the program does not need a build tool. But compared to the original version, the functions are quite limited. The number of filters and effects has also been significantly reduced.
In this sense, TikTok Lite is ideal for “viewers” of the social network who only watch videos and use the most basic functions of the platform. If this group gives up the original version of the app, they will benefit from considerable internal memory savings and, of course, lower data consumption. For those who venture into the Sea of Creation from TikTok, there is no escaping: the only alternative is the original version.
