According to US doctors, gray lips, skin and nails can be an “emergency warning sign” for Covid.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) run the discoloration as an indication that someone should seek medical attention immediately.
American health chiefs have recognized this as a potential sign that urgent medical attention has been needed since the pandemic began, despite recent claims that it could be Omicron.
The CDC recognizes more than 11 symptoms – including a headache, sore throat, and nausea – as a possible Covid symptom and lists dozens more as possible signs.
But the NHS still only recognizes three symptoms as warning signs of Covid, namely fever, new persistent cough, and loss of smell and taste.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited the discoloration as an indication that someone should seek medical help immediately
This is despite studies in the UK showing vaccines “changed the game” and resulted in more infected people facing much milder symptoms of the virus.
The NHS does not view gray lips, skin, or nails as warning signs of the virus, which requires urgent medical attention.
It only warns of pale, blotchy, blue, or gray skin in children and says parents of any child with discoloration should call 999 immediately.
What are the main Covid symptoms?
According to researchers at health data research firm ZOE and King’s College London, these are the main symptoms of Covid.
They say vaccines have caused many people to suffer from lighter illnesses.
The symptoms are:
- A headache;
- Runny nose;
- Loss of smell and taste;
- To cough;
- Sore throat.
In guidelines updated last February, the CDC said gray lips, skin, and nails could be a symptom of Covid.
It has been listed along with difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, and an inability to wake or stay awake.
The agency said, “If anyone shows any of these signs, get an ambulance right away.”
Gray skin and lips, medically called cyanosis, are warning signs of insufficient oxygen in the blood or poor circulation.
It can be linked to serious problems such as asthma, pneumonia, or heart disease.
It is likely that this symptom will not appear until the later stages of Covid infection.
Gray nails can be a warning sign of iron deficiency, suggesting that vital organs in the body may be having trouble getting enough oxygen.
They can also be caused by injuries, regular smoking, a fungal infection, or hands that are often in water or detergents.
The NHS list – which is regularly criticized for its short list of symptoms – lists only three possible signs.
But the surveillance, which has involved more than a million Britons, has revealed four other key symptoms to look out for.
In addition to the top three NHS symptoms, the ZOE Covid Symptom Study says a runny nose, headache, sneezing, and sore throat are signs of Covid.
They say, “Many people are not aware of all of the symptoms to look out for.
“This puts people at risk of mistakenly believing they have a cold when they could actually have Covid.”
