More than a year after the launch of PlayStation 5 and rival Xbox Series X, while finding a next-gen console on the shelves is very difficult, it is even more difficult to find a next-gen game. to get the most out of the hardware.
In other words, when we said the “new generation” had arrived about a year ago, we lied to you because little or nothing has changed so far.
PS5 and Xbox Series S / X: One year and the next generation has not yet started
So this article goes into the topic we discussed a few weeks ago about the fact that buying a new generation console, be it a PS5, Xbox Series S or Series X, is still not (very) worthwhile.
Because even though the hardware hit the market over a year ago with big promises and super futuristic designs, little has changed, and in the past 12 months we’ve seen the most “HD updates”, remasters, and delays of many of the games, that we really wanted to see on our consoles.
In short, the new generation is not here yet! There are no consoles, let alone games on the shelves. But that begs a question … What is a “next-gen” game?
Well, there isn’t an exact definition, but it’s easy to say that a next generation game is a game that couldn’t be made for Xbox One or PS4. We even have an example on the PS5 page in the form of Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart, a project that seeks to make the most of the super-fast SSD on Sony’s latest console. This is basically a game that couldn’t exist on PS4 in the same way.
However, these games also have to justify why we went for a new console that, frankly, is far from cheap. It is clear that in the case of the PS5 only with Ratchet and perhaps Returnal, the matter is short … even very short.
What happened to this ‘delay’?
Well, we have to point out COVID and the resulting current shortage of semiconductors, as well as the shortage of skilled labor, etc. In other words, the same talk you have been hearing for several months.
But that’s just the “zero point” that the fact that there aren’t enough consoles meant that several of the planned projects were postponed in order to come onto the market at a time with more consoles or of course, for the studios, to try to create a “port” to last generation consoles like God of War Ragnarok or Gran Turismo 7, which have been postponed and will also appear on PS4 … To be honest, it was always clear that it was a PS5 exclusive.
When will the new generation come?
Excellent question. Nobody knows! Finally, Halo Infinite and Forza Horion 5 are also available for Xbox One 2013. And the 2013 PlayStation 4 will also receive God of War, GT 7 and Horizon Forbidden West.
But here we have to point out that these transition periods are by no means “abnormal”. They always happen when we bring a new generation of consoles onto the market. This time around, however, it looks like it’s going to be a much longer period of time than expected.
In short, the new generation won’t really take off until the vast majority of games on the PS4 and Xbox One give up, and what we’ve seen is a trend that could well last through 2023 or 2024.
