New social media features to encourage people to get Covid boosters

Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are rolling out new features to encourage people to get their coronavirus booster jabs.

Starting Friday, users will be able to update their profiles with frames or stickers to show that they have received their recharge or are aiming to do so if they are eligible.

It follows that previously on certain social networking websites and apps, people could show that they had their first and second jab.

TikTok also hosted a “Grab a Jab” event in London earlier this year.

In the UK, more than 16 million booster vaccines have now been given.

People aged 40 and over who received their second dose of vaccine at least six months ago are currently entitled to a booster dose.

A new campaign ad will also start on Friday, showing how Covid-19 can build up in closed rooms and how this can be prevented.

Vaccination Minister Maggie Throup said, “Getting your booster is one of the most important things you can do this winter to protect yourself and your family.

“It is fantastic to see some of the biggest names known after the phenomenal introduction of vaccines, so their users can proudly show that they have done their part in helping us build a defensive wall across the country.

“I urge everyone who is entitled – don’t hesitate, get your vaccine or a booster shot today to protect yourself and your loved ones.”
