Lages’ success explained
Wolves manager Bruno Lage said his team’s win over Manchester United was due to the way he read the opponent’s full-back positions.
Situation: “The most important thing for us is to see where the full-backs are.
“To find the rooms, when they are defending and when they are attacking, to see where they are.
“When you see them defending and trying to block in the first half – I saw it from the bench – they did [Edinson] Cavani tries to block Ruben [Neves], Cristiano Ronaldo tries to control [Conor] Coady and the wingers inside.
“So the room is outside. Therefore [Nelson] Semedo and [Fernando] Marcal had a lot of chances and a lot of ball in the first half and the boys found these spaces.
“That’s why it’s so important when you have the ball to know where the court is and when to defend, when [Francisco] Trinçao and [Daniel] Podence understands that if the full-backs are in front of them or if they leave, it’s not your man, so control the space inside.
“That’s why it was so important that we work hard on these questions, that the players understood the plan and that we deserved the three points.”
