Live Covid updates as an announcement from Boris Johnson after today’s crunch lockdown meeting

Boris Johnson is preparing for a briefing with crunch data before deciding on the Covid rules

The latest Covid data is due to be released to Boris Johnson on Monday as he weighs up whether to impose new restrictions on England to curb the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

If the numbers are positive, Mr Johnson could be persuaded to stick with the lighter measures put in place under Plan B, possibly with some additional guidance.

However, if cases began to put unsustainable pressure on the NHS, the prime minister may feel the need to step in with tighter restrictions.

The Times reported, however, that weddings and funerals are always exempt from the new rules.

The latest figures from the NHS showed that more than 10,000 patients waited 12 hours before being hospitalized in November, up from 2,148 the previous year.

While a record number of NHS trusts registered patients had waited almost 24 hours between arriving at the hospital by ambulance and being examined.
