Material inspired by running shoes can protect buildings from earthquakes

Published

By

Researchers at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia have developed a new material that is able to absorb energy and protect buildings from damage from impact. The inspiration came from observing the compound used in running shoes and viscoelastic foam pillows, NASA’s famous pillow.

The 3D printed product has a synetic absorption capacity that can withstand the impact force of a car at a constant speed of 60 km / h. This bioplastic mimics the behavior of auxetic materials – objects that expand transversely when pulled out and contract transversely when squeezed.

“Instead of flattening out when stretched or swelling when compressed, auxetic materials expand or contract in all directions at the same time, making them very energy-absorbing and resilient,” explains materials engineer Tatheer Zahra, first author of the study.

geometric shapes

Because auxetic materials available on the market are expensive, the researchers recreated the geometric shapes of these materials with a 3D printer. The resulting product has sufficient strength to replace steel and fiber reinforced polymer networks commonly used in building construction.

A sample of this 3D-printed material weighing just 180 grams can withstand a force of around 2,500 kg in any direction when it shrinks and absorbs an energy of around 260 joules without showing any structural damage or significant changes to the original shape.

“On a normal scale, the connections embedded in these auxetic 3D geometries could theoretically withstand large shocks or impact energies caused by gas explosions, earthquakes, wind forces, and vehicle collisions,” adds Zahra.

Other advantages

Incorporating the new material into conventional mortar, for example, would protect the auxetic geometric shapes from microorganisms and temperatures above 60 ° C, so that they last almost the entire life of a structure without damage.

3D printing also simplifies material modeling and makes it easy to choose the size or design of each part before running an architectural project with various structures with base load and stress requirements that are used in civil engineering.

“Bioplastics offer a more sustainable, low-carbon alternative to fiber-reinforced plastic or other non-biodegradable polymers. In addition, it is more economical than using available auxetic fabrics, which can cost up to US $ 400 (around R $ 2,200 at current price) per square meter, ”concludes Tatheer Zahra.

How much is a burnt Bugatti Chiron worth? You will not believe

Published

on

By

With a value of around 3.96 million US dollars (approx. 21.98 million R $ at current price), the Bugatti Chiron is one of the fastest, most expensive and most sought-after cars in the world. And its price is absurd, even if it suffers an unexpected attack and is ultimately damaged by fire. Like this?

The curious story took place in the US and was reported by the Royal Exotic Cars YouTube channel and just went viral with the purchase and restoration of damaged supercars. The October 9 post already has more than 223,000 views. And why you will understand now.

As Houston and Tony said in a relaxed conversation, the Bugatti Chiron in question belonged to a hip-hop singer and was a victim of vandalism. Three Molotov cocktails were thrown under the hood and the damage to the super machine was considerable.

The body, windows, seats, instrument panel and part of the wiring were affected, a scenario that led to the insurance company that owns the policy ordering the popular “total loss” of the Bugatti. And what does that mean? Simply put, this means that even if someone is willing to spend a fortune buying and renovating the sports car, they cannot drive it and display it. So as the americans would say what’s the point (or, What is the logic ?, in good ole Portuguese).

It’s for sale … and it’s not cheap

Well, despite the little spoiler we informed that the Bugatti will no longer be drivable even if it is repaired, it is for sale on the Copart Insurance website. And the price to get the damaged sports car from the yard to someone else’s garage is incredibly high.

According to the YouTubers, who told the story of the world, the channel tried to make the purchase itself, but was shocked by the amount demanded by the insurer: $ 1.2 million, the equivalent of R $ 6.6 million.

The broadcaster’s idea was to spend about a third of the amount on the purchase, win it back, and resell it with a good profit margin. However, the “plan” failed because of two simple words in the insurer’s final report: total loss. A little happy ending to a very curious story, don’t you think?
