Two of League One’s big hitters will battle it out at the Stadium of Light tonight.
After almost three weeks without a game after two postponements related to Covid-19, Sheffield Wednesday will end 2021 with great success on a visit to Sunderland.
Trying to predict Darren Moore’s starting XI for the duel against the Black Cats requires a tremendous amount of guesswork. Their last two games have been postponed meaning they last played on December 11 when they triumphed 2-0 at Crewe Alexandra after goals on either side of halftime from Barry Bannan and Lee Gregory.
The training ground on Middlewood Road on Wednesday reopened last week.
However, it remains a mystery how many of Moore’s squad have been hit by Covid in the past few weeks.
However, the longer action break has given Chey Dunkley, Sam Hutchinson and Dennis Adeniran additional time to recover from their respective injuries.
Dunkley is about to return to the heart of their rearguard. Sunderland promises to be one of the toughest challenges of the season for the Owls, so Dunkley’s experience in the heat of the moment will be important.
Does Ciaran Brennan deserve to miss? No, but Moore can skip him on this occasion and go in his back three with Dunkley, Liam Palmer and Marvin Johnson.
Will Moore change his wing back? It’s unlikely. Jack Hunt and Theo Corbeanu should get a run.
Australia international Massimo Luongo is serving the second of his three-game suspension due to his sacking in Portsmouth.
But Adeniran and Josh Windass could come right in the middle of the park for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Lewis Wing. Moore will need a lot of energy and creativity in the center to hit Sunderland hard on the counter. Windass has already shown that he can wreak havoc in the # 10 position.
Callum Paterson is attacking top scorer Lee Gregory for the second game in a row. Paterson grew into the punching role against Crewe and was unlucky not to get into the scorers’ list.
Possible owl page on Sunderland (3-5-2): Peacock farrell; Palmer, Dunkley, Johnson; Hunt, Adeniran, Bannan, Windass, Corbeanu; Paterson, Gregor.
