A senior Chinese official said Thursday that the US should have no “illusions” about Taiwan and reiterated that Beijing would not compromise on the issue, according to a report.

Wu Qian, a spokesman for China’s Defense Ministry, held a press conference and accused the US of saying “many irresponsible things” on the matter, Reuters reported.

Beijing has irritated its neighbors and Western governments with increasingly assertive foreign and military policies. Taiwan and the mainland have been ruled separately since 1949 after a civil war.

“What the US has done proves that the so-called democracy summit is only a pretext and a tool to pursue geopolitical goals, to oppress other countries, to divide the world, to serve their own interests and to assert their hegemony in the world “State Department spokesman Zhao Lijian said, according to the Associated Press.
