BJP publishes list of candidates for surveys at 3 civil authorities in West Bengal

BJP placed 14 of the 41 seats in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation with female candidates.

Calcutta:

The BJP published a list of 180 candidates for election to three civic bodies in West Bengal on Friday, due to take place on January 22, said party spokesman Samik Bhattacharya.

The party placed female candidates in 14 of the 41 seats in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

The number was 42 of the 106 counties of the Asansol Municipal Corporation, and in Chandannagar they received nine out of 33 women tickets, he said.

“We have tried to get women from both general and SC categories more represented in local elections,” said Bhattacharya.

Debashis Jana, former confidante of the former mayor and ruling candidate of the Trinamool Congress, Sabyasachi Dutta, was installed by BJP in Station 31 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

Dutta defected to BJP but was returning to TMC after losing to Sujit Bose, a member of Mamata Banerjee’s ministry, in the April-May vote in West Bengal.

Chaitali Tiwari, daughter of TMC renegade and BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari Chaitali Tiwari, was installed in Asansol.

Jitendra Tiwari, former mayor of Asansol Municipal Corporation, said if fair elections were held, BJP would secure Asansol Municipal Corporation.

In addition to the three municipal bodies, the elections will also take place in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on January 22, the state electoral commission said.
